The Dire Straits Experience rocked Somabay, for the first time in Egypt, in what was probably the best concert ever, singing their iconic hit songs: Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing and Brothers in Arms. Dire Straits has the most amazingly loyal fan base from all over the world. It has been so great to revive the band spirit while every member rocked their instruments as if they were many limbs of one body. Moreover, it was fantastic to have a diversified crowd from all age groups transforming our Somabay marina into the ultimate party arena. And so it is that these songs, in all their ambition, grandeur and aching beauty, are once again presented live for the fans that have kept them alive.
The audience, on Friday night, witnessed not only musicians who have played with the likes of Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney and Rod Stewart, but who were also undeniably delighted to be celebrating music whose heart never stopped beating.
The energy and interaction of the two musicians felt renewed, with Chris White busting out sax solos and interchanging seamlessly between flute and tambourine alongside Terence Reis. The hits came fast and furious; ”Telegraph road” “Walk of Life”, a slower & more acoustic “Romeo and Juliet” all brought the crowd to a symphonic singalong. Air drumming, whistling and clapping ensued with “Sweet Surrender” finding the members returning to the stage for an encore upon the audiences’ request “WE WANT MORE”.
It wasn’t just the music or the lyrics elevating the Marina atmosphere in Somabay, but the sense of camaraderie among the band members all of which was caught through Cairo Zoom’s lens. Click here for the full album
